SUPPORT, ADVOCACY, AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR THE K-12 HUMAN RESOURCE PROFESSIONAL

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MESSAGE

Hello everyone!

Congratulation to all for making it through another year!  It is now time to really take a look to the future and finish the hiring for next year along with budgeting and bargaining.  As you think forward to professional development for your existing HR staff/director, it is time to take a look at WSPA's HELP offerings.  The twenty-fourth HELP series is being held in Leavenworth at the Icicle Village Resort again this year at the  and it will run from July 10-14.  If you have not attended a previous HELP session, please take a serious look at the offerings below and consider attending one of the sessions.  Please take a look at the member requests below and respond directly to the requester.

As many of you may already be aware, WSPA works closely with WASA in developing a Legislative Platform and obtains reports as the Legislature is in session.  We are currently working with WASA and other associations in developing our 2024 Legislative Platform and I am looking for input from WSPA members as to concerns and priorities so I can share them with the committee.  If you have ideas/concerns, please forward them to me soon.

Our WSPA board will meet in the middle of July to develop our budget and activities for the 2023-24 year and if you have ideas or concerns you want to bring up, either email Jane Stencel, our outgoing President and Professional Development Coordinator, me, or our incoming President, Doug Christensen.  Our email addresses are listed below.

Doug Christensen, Assistant Superintendent at Kennewick SD; WSPA President 2023-24: doug.christensen@ksd.org

Jane Stencel, Executive Director at East Valley SD; WSPA President 22-23; WSPA Professional Development Coordinator: stencelj@evsd.org  Darrell Heisler, Executive Director of WSPA: dheisler@wspa.net

Member Requests this week:

Erica Reich from Naches Valley School Districts requests the following:

Good morning all,

Our principals currently use School Data Solutions for our Cert evaluation; they feel it could be more user-friendly. Do any of you have recommendations for a better Cert evaluation system?

Thank you,

Erika Reich

This one is from me: Does anyone have written protocol when determining whether or not to put an employee on Paid Admin Leave or allow them to continue working?  If you do have written protocol, please share it with me (admin@wspa.net) as I am working on a project for WASA, AWSP and WSSDA.  Once complete, I will share with our entire membership.

Funny of the week: I wanted to buy some "Camo pants", but I couldn't find any....

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Have a great week everyone!

Unemployment Insurance: Sign up now for upcoming SOC code webinars

Learn more about Standard Occupational Classification codes on May 20 or June 3

Do you have questions about Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes? Sign up for one of our upcoming webinars!

All employers will be required to report SOC codes when they submit their quarterly tax reports starting with their fourth quarter 2022 report. At that time, you could get a penalty for incorrect SOC reporting. Reporting SOC codes is currently optional and is available only to single filers.

Upcoming webinars

If you have questions or want to learn more about using SOC codes, register for one of our free webinars.

  • Friday, May 20, at 11 to 11:45 a.m. - Register
  • Friday, June 3, at 11 to 11:45 a.m. - Register

During these webinars, we’ll talk about:

  • What are SOC codes?
  • When are SOC codes mandatory?
  • How to look up SOC codes.
  • How to add SOC codes with keyed or imported wage data.

Note: We will provide the same information in both webinars. However, questions could vary in each webinar, so you are welcome to sign up for both.

What is SOC?

SOC is a federal coding system that helps government agencies and private businesses compare occupational data.

In 2019, the Washington State Legislature passed a law requiring employers to report SOC codes in their quarterly reports for unemployment insurance.
